Android VR/Windows release 4 is up on Patreon!

Hey everyone! Sorry for the slow updates on the blog, here! I’ve been updating every day over on Patreon, but I’ve let this one lapse a bit! Still working hard over here to get a public release out, and believe it or not, the next one (R5) is going to be the public release candidate!

I wanted to announce that R4 just dropped for VR Patrons, and the release to all patrons happens on the 20th of this month! This is a HUGE improvement over previous versions, with awesome 3D audio, better frame rates on mobile VR, better animation on all versions, and a neat zoom feature for the Windows client!

If you’d like a full breakdown of all the things that are new with this version, you’ve come to the right place! I’m working steadily towards a public release on this, but if you’d like to help out, please do so over on Patreon!

Help me make this even more awesome, and dammit help me start development for Vive so we can really get high-tech with it and make an asset store that lets other animators/sound effects people/writers/modelers etc sell you whatever fantasy you want! <3 With the code in there now I could make a dating simulator, an adventure game, or a bunch of other stuff. It’s really quite cool and flexible!

Before the release notes, I wanted to drop a massive thank you shout out to all the people helping me with this and the other stuff I do through Patreon! Massive thanks to DioKyo, Justin P, Holi, Wolfzahn, RisusPinkPie91, Char, Rick, Andreas, BluFeather, TV4ELP, Abz, Kamil, Cross_Wolfv1, Crimson Flare, ShadowKing, GallantFacade, James W, Bradley, Gian, Taloverae, Lockhorn, RhythmPixel, Chris, Golden Muse, LittlePip, BlueGuy10168, Bruteforce123, Chrono Flash, Khrum, NamelessNP, John E, Not What We Expected, Xaldon, Cho’Angath, Squinners, Brony18, Billy D, Nyxmania, Robert, George M, Doorman, Chris H, General Mittler, CobaltHead932,  KoRnBrony, LazyThunderlane, Exick, Alejandro, HarryClopper, Sir Kabi, Prodigy Tony, Vitavia, The Detective with the Funny Hat, Cast, Furry_bunny, Apple000001, Steady Strikes, AshyMcHoof, ZestyPig, Ransiel, HorsyHorse, QuantumAge, Little Bolt, David M, LinkDragon, Daniel, Frikken, Bluhbluh12445, RIB, Butts,  Prime Color Photography, Daniel, Joshua, Howeszy, Austin M, Tycser, VIP and Linton! You guys and gals make this awesome to do and I couldn’t do it without your support. Thank you so much! I continued to be humbled by your generosity.

Release notes!

I’ve named the project “Besti”

Why Besti?

Naming stuff is hard, but here’s how I came up with this. I did some thinking of the end-goal of this project. First I examined the primary draw, which is to spend time in whatever desired capacity with some kind of fantasy creature. It’s overtly sexual now, but it doesn’t have to be that way. I’ve programmed it in such a way that you can have a rather realized friend, in something like a relationship simulator if so desired. The modules aren’t made for that, but this is really about interacting with a good friend, a “besty” if we use contemporary slang.

Second, there is an inherent animal focus, here. Pony/Furry fandoms are all about our affinity for animals, or “bestial” creatures. This software is artwork produced for and by people of those fandoms, and therefore, it is going to remain as such.

By combining the words Besty and Bestial in to Besti, the name is indicative of what the software is, and exists as something of a mission statement of that purpose.

Menu system alterations
Extended time in a 3D environment causes nausea. I know this. I’ve moved the menu system into a more attractive and touch-based 2D interface to help with that. If you want to go to a different module, the new menu gives you a chance to rest your eyes and brain a moment to go somewhere else.

Field of view adjustment
You can now change your field of view to better match your experience. This is done differently on Windows and Android.
Windows
On Windows you adjust the field of view with your mouse wheel. Scrolling in and out allows you to adjust your fov between 30 and 90 degrees. The default is 60 degrees.
Android
On Android, the system now chooses a FOV appropriate for your viewer. It should feel natural if your system is configured properly, but if it is not and you feel like you are having a fish-eye or telescope-like view, you may need to what the software thinks you’re using. If you have a nice headset, it should have come with a calibration QR code. If it does not have one of those, don’t google it, instead, go to https://vr.google.com/cardboard/viewerprofilegenerator/ and follow the directions. It will take a few minutes, but you can set up your viewer properly there. Everything should look right in the game once you set your viewer.

Why no FOV options for Cardboard? You said…
I was horribly wrong. Adjusting the FOV made me properly ill, and it has a couple other negative attributes, too. The way the lens distortion works is based on your FOV. If you adjust the FOV manually, it doesn’t distort the overall image properly which leads to a weird bending effect that gives you a headache.

Further, the head-tracking is based on these FOV values as well. If you look left, for example, the software knows how much you should see and how fast the camera should move to make “left” be where you’re looking. By adjusting the FOV, you no longer look around the world in a 1-to-1 way. This causes confusion with your inner ear, and makes you feel dizzy.

“High” graphics settings
While I can’t run it properly on my 2013 phone, your new one may be able to do it. Choosing the “high” option improves the shadows, and activates anti-aliasing to make everything look much nicer. The default setting is still “medium” which uses simple shadows and some texture filtering. “low” now has a lower system requirement, and should give you a few more FPS if you have a 2011-2012 mid-range handset. On Windows, “High” is the default and has awesome shadows and prettier everything.

Fun credits sequence
Enjoy the fun little scenario I put together to thank all the wonderful people that helped me make this. Select Credits from the main menu to check it out.Misc improvements everywhere elseSo many code changes that I’m not going to bore you with them! There’s a reason the new version of the game is nearly twice the size of the previous one.

Hi Friends!

Who’s up for some VR horse porn?

My VR Pony is playable. Instead of camping on it forever until it reaches some mythical “done” state, I’ve decided to make it a premium on Patreon as I develop it further.

Watch an HD video of where it is currently, here on Google Drive

About the game:

CG/3D artwork isn’t that sexy when compared to 2D, so I wanted to do the only thing that my medium can do better: be immersive. Virtual reality is all the rage right now, so I thought, why not put 3D porn into a VR experience? More than just seeing it in 3D, I want to perceive sex with a cartoon horse.

This was a VERY good idea, and there’s so much more I can do.

It’s quite magical to hear positional audio in your ears and see different elements of the scene by moving your head. I just have one scene right now, and it’s sort of just a movie, but I’ve built a framework to easily add new scenes, with new ways of interacting with the characters.

Right now I just have the Android + Cardboard version playable, but I hope to have a Windows/Mac 2D version done by the end of the month. I’d make an Oculus version if I had an Oculus, so maybe some day!

Want to do it?

Head over to Patreon and sign up. A minimum of $1 for 300+ (and counting) hours of work isn’t unreasonable, plus you get to enter the monthly raffles, get fun behind the scenes stuff, and more!

Android System Requirements:

VR is more attainable now than ever before. You’ll need:

  • A relatively recent Android device from within the last 3-4 years.

  • It must be able to run the Cardboard app. You can find this on the Google Play store. This app checks to see if you have gyros and a compass that the cardboard SDK can access (plus there’s a ton of fun stuff on there.)

  • Must have a Cardboard-style 3D viewer gadget of some sort. They range between less than $10 USD to $100. The cheap ones work OK, but ones that strap to your head are more fun ($30ish.) Try to get one that taps the screen as a button input, as those magnet switches don’t work well on all phones. Amazon and ebay are also good sources for these on the cheap. One of mine was $8.88 with free shipping, and I built another one myself out of fiberglass.

Unsure if it’ll work? Try the demo (just the main menu.)

Step 1: Install Cardboard from the Play Store (free.) If you can’t install this, your phone can’t run the game and you’ll need to wait a bit for the Windows/Mac version.

Step 2: Download the demo APK file right here.

Step 3: Put the APK file on your phone via USB, on an SD card, over the network, or whatever works for you. If you’re savvy you can download it directly onto your phone. APKs are compressed installer files for Android OS programs.

Step 4: On your phone, use your file browser (download ES File Explorer from the Play Store if you don’t have one) and click the APK file you put on there. Some phones may ask you to change a setting to “sideload” content like this. I can’t put porn on the Play Store, so that’s the only option I have. Choose “install” and not the “market” option if presented such a choice.

Step 5: Once it’s done installing, you can launch the game from within Cardboard, or just by finding it in your programs list under “My VR Pony.”

FAQ:

My volume buttons don’t work! What do I do?

Cardboard disables your volume buttons. Tap the gear in the bottom middle of the screen, and this will temporarily re-enable them. Set your volume, then tap on the game again to play.

My head is no longer attached to my body properly. What do I do?

Now you know why Oculus has a camera on you to keep track of your orientation. Look straight up inside any chapter and push that “Center” button. That button will reorient what “forward” is to you, and when you look down again, you’ll be realigned with your horse body. It’s sort of a weird feeling.

It runs bad! What do I do?

Click the quality down button on the menu at your feet in the menu, or to your left in Chapter 1. Also, close down other applications to free up some resources. This is a resource-intensive program.

How did you make this?

Unity Personal Edition. It’s now free so long as you make less than $100k on the game. I taught myself C# to make this.

My virus scanner says this is a bad idea! What do I do?

Look up why it’s complaining. It is likely because you have a program from outside the Play Store on your phone. Google won’t let me put this on the Play Store, because sex is bad and violence is good. I don’t understand, either.

Can I help? I have a gadget/experience/big wiener/etc...

Yes. If you want to help me with anything please add me on Skype (skunk.frakker is my handle.) If you want to contribute financially (I’m a very poor student) hit up my Patreon. Believe me when I say that helps me immensely.

When can I play it once I pledge on Patreon?

I’ll send you a link containing all the rewards your tier gets once the cards have gone through at the beginning of the month if you’re new. Unfortunately, a lot of people just make a pledge, download what they want, and then delete their Patreon accounts. If I make an update I’ll send it to you right away once you’ve paid, even if I make it in the middle of the month. “Dine and Dash” becomes a lot easier when one is anonymous, and sadly, it’s done all the time.

Can I just have the thing for free? Come on, Skunk.

If you want the latest version you’ll need to be a Patron or help me with it in some way. There’s no DRM or anything on the program, but the more contributors I have the better it will be. It’s ours, and it’s as good as we want to make it, together. The Brony community deserves the best VR porn game, because we have the best fetish. This isn’t a one-and-done thing, it’s ongoing, and we have to feed it to make it grow.

I find my patrons to be the biggest motivation I’ve ever had to produce good stuff, so thanks to Rick, Gian, Holi, Not What We Expected, Andreas, and Bruteforce 123. You all continue to make this the coolest hobby I’ve ever had, and I am humbled by your generosity.

I also want to extend thanks to my alpha test team. They crashed so you don’t have to! Tommy, Trooper, Steven W, Sonitus, Richer, RetroManium, TMQ Historia, John K, StarlightSerina, Blazerart and Brock are all awesome people and very funny, too. That chat is perpetually a riot, and I look forward to blowing up that poor Galaxy S3 Mini again and again trying to get this to work on there.

The game features modified Overhaul ponies, so thank you to Poninnahka and the team for the gift that keeps on giving.

Technical advice and additional resources were kindly and graciously provided by my IRL developer friend, TenStringDragon
